Switchers Guide to Mac OS X Software

I’m not sure how I stumbled upon this little gem of a web site, but thinkmac.net offers some very useful tips and information on the Mac operating system.

For PC guys like me, they offer the Switcher’s Guide to OS X Software, which is a listing of Mac-based programs that will get those “not in the know, in the know” very quickly.  I particularly like their love of open-source.

Screen Capture Options in OS 10.5

The gang over at MacWorld outline further screen capture funcitonality with the Leopard operating system. You can read up on the functionality here or make a cheat sheet from the following:

  • Command-Shift-4 : Allows you to drag the cursor to make a selection box of the desktop area you wish to capture. This area is automatically saved as an image file.
  • Command-Shift-4-Spacebar : This command is supposed to allow you to drag the selection region around the desktop, but I cannot get it to do this. When I perform this command, a camera icon appears and captures the entire desktop to an image file. Anyone tell me what I’m missing?
  • Command-Shift-4 and Shift key : This command series locks in the selection area vertically or horizontally.
  • Command-Shift-4 and Option key : This command allows for a region resize that is both vertically and horizontally proportionate.

UPDATE 20080106 – I took a look at the movie available on MacWorld’s site (same article referenced above, just scroll down to the bottom) that outlines the commands above, but I still cannot for the life of me to get Command-Shift-4 to work. Oh well, I have been able to live my life without it up to this point so far, so I guess I’ll press on…

Make Your XP Computer Look Like OS X

From the “I don’t get why you’d want to do this” department comes a desktop modification for WindowsXP from the good people at FlyakiteOSX. This mod transforms your WindowsXP desktop to emulate an OS X environment.

To get an idea of what to expect, you can give it a test drive by following this link and selecting the “HERE” in “please click HERE”. You can download the program here.

Why can’t people just do what I do and drop a stupid amount of money on a new MacBook? :)

Add Quit to the Finder Menu

via Lifehacker by Kyle Pott on 12/16/07

Mac OS X only: Sick of not being able to exit Finder? A quick terminal command will add a “quit” option to the menu in Finder. This means you can run Finder like any other Mac application. If you’re running some heavy applications, simply close Finder and enjoy the extra, albeit small, processing power. Open a terminal and enter the following command:

defaults write com.apple.Finder QuitMenuItem 1

You will need to restart for the changes to take effect. Here’s the caveat: Finder also manages the icons on your desktop. If you exit Finder, you won’t be able to see any of the icons on your desktop. Just click the icon in the dock to bring Finder back.

Use a Screensaver as Desktop Wallpaper with Wallsaver

via Lifehacker by Kyle Pott on 12/15/07

Mac OS X only: Turn your desktop into a photo slideshow using freeware app Wallsaver. Wallsaver is a very simple application written in AppleScript that replaces your wallpaper with the current screensaver. Setting the wallpaper as Flurry (shown above) is pretty annoying, however, using your pictures folder is an excellent way to use your desktop as a digital picture frame. A few months ago we showed Linux users how to get the same effect using a nautilus hack. Thanks, NineTailedFox!
